SBC Update Nov 25, 2008 @ 04:34 PM

The School Business Competition (SBC), has been offered as a free teaching resource in local high schools since 1986. Sprott has been a proud developer and coordinator of the competition, and has valued the opportunity to introduce important business concepts to high school students through interaction and simulation.

Unfortunately, our current resources are such that we will not be running the School Business Competition for the upcoming calendar year. Based upon a comprehensive review of our financial resources and the required demands on human resources, the School has made the difficult decision to put on hold the delivery of SBC. We regret any impact this may have on curriculum planning for teachers in the local area.

SBC 2008/2009 Aug 29, 2008 @ 02:30 PM

We would like to thank all teachers who participated in our SBC Fall 2007 pilot competition. The Fall competition proved to be very successful; however, due to limited resources and the continuing popularity of the winter competition, SBC will return to the one-term competition model.

Please see our dates and milestones page for the winter competition dates.  We look forward to your winter participation!

Cheers,

Team SBC

Ontario Classic Semi-Finals May 12, 2008 @ 04:21 PM
We at SBC are in a very difficult situation and would like to apologise for any confusion, frustration, or other issues that may have arisen due to technical and communications difficulties.

Due to an external technical issue after quarter 14, approximately 50% of the teams participating were unable to access their firm and industry analyses as well as their financial statements. Unfortunately the game administrator was not made aware of this problem until Quarter 15 had been processed, meaning that half of the teams were forced to submit blind inputs while the other half of the field had access to this information. At this point, the integrity and fairness of the competition had been compromised. To further complicate the issue, when these ‘blind teams’ attempted to submit inputs for Quarter 16, they were unable to access their input screen rendering further input processing useless as only 50% of the entire competition was able to submit decisions.

We realise that this became an exercise in frustration for many students and teachers – and it has been one for us as well. In attempting to devise an alternative strategy it has become clear to us that no one solution will satisfy all parties involved.

From the perspective of the teams who were leading at the time, the loss of their successful efforts for the first 14 quarters would be unfair should we re-start the competition. From the perspective of teams who were not in the lead, they were not provided with the additional 8 inputs that had the potential to affect the results.

Ultimately we have decided that will ‘call the game’ as of the end of Quarter 14. The firm leading each industry at Quarter 14 will advance to the finals on Friday May 16th.

Although this was a difficult decision to make, we feel that there is just reasoning behind it. Primarily we feel that ending the competition as it stood at Quarter 14 was the most fair. No unfair advantages or second chances were offered and offering to restart the competition or offering other opportunities to advance to further competitions would require us to offer the same opportunity for all competitions that we run.

Like all of you, we certainly wish that this technical issue could have been avoided and that a full 10-2pm semi-final could have been run, however external factors have made this impossible. We recognize the frustration felt by all - we are right there with you!

Once again we would like to apologise and express that in light of a very complicated and difficult situation we feel that we have made the best decision available to us in order to uphold the integrity and fairness of the Sprott Business Competition.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this decision, please feel free to contact us. Additionally, congratulations to the teams that will be advancing to the final round on Friday. Good luck!

In a continuous effort for improvement we have developed both a Teacher and  Student survey. Your feedback is one of the many reasons we have been successful, and we thank you for that constant support. We hope you will take just a few short moments, to fill out the survey.

We ask that students or teachers participating in the playoff rounds complete the survey once playoffs have been completed as we appreciate feedback on the playoff rounds as well as the main competition.

Final Inputs Friday April 18th Apr 17, 2008 @ 08:36 AM
The time has come for your final inputs!

Last inputs are due Friday April 18th at your regular processing time.
Final industry results will be available as soon as the quarter has been processed.
Please keep in mind that eligibility for playoffs depends upon your firm ranking and participation rates and ultimately teacher approval!

For those of you who think you may be eligible to participate in our playoff rounds we strongly recommend that you look at our rules and regulations (http://sprottbusinesscompetition.ca/SBC/information/general/rules.aspx) now so that you are familiar with them before playoff rounds start.

Good luck with your final inputs and thank you for participating in another fun and challenging SBC main competition!

Last Inputs and Participation Apr 07, 2008 @ 01:57 PM
Attention SBC competitors:

Just a quick note to let you know that the last inputs are due April 18th!
This means that there are 4 official quarters left (maybe more with blinds or double blinds).

Going through the participation rates we have noticed that there are some firms with the highest shareholder's equity in their industry that have not maintained the MANDATORY 50% participation rate. Please ensure that you SUBMIT inputs in the final quarters to ensure that you are eligible to participate in the playoff rounds, should you obtain the highest shareholder's equity in your industry.

Good Luck!

Happy April Fool's Day: Blind Inputs are no Joke! Apr 01, 2008 @ 12:04 PM
This is just a quick heads up to let you know that you should be expecting blind quarters at some point in the near future!

Blind quarters require firms to make decisions for two quarters simultaneously-without seeing the results of the first input! You will see that you are going through a blind quarter on your input page. Check out the Terminology page for a detailed definition of blind quarters: http://sprottbusinesscompetition.ca/SBC/information/general/terminology.aspx?L=B

These blind quarters aren't meant to be mean but are supposed to simulate the 'real business world' where firms often have to make decisions for the next quarter before they have all of the information about their last quarters earnings, market share, etc.

Good Luck!

Is your firm producing fewer units than you choose in your inputs? Mar 27, 2008 @ 11:16 AM

Recently there have been lots of questions about units produced. Many of you are wondering why your firm is producing fewer units than you choose in your inputs! This is not a system error- this is a capacity issue!

Each firm has a certain capacity: number of units it is physically capable of producing per quarter. You can find your firm capacity in the Firm Analysis. Capacity is based on many factors, such as employee efficiency (also found in Firm Analysis), and long term investments. A firm can produce (slightly) more than its estimated capacity when it uses employee overtime-but this is costly! Although firms can produce more than the estimated capacity, there is a limit, which occurs when 100% employee overtime is reached.

Firms are unable to produce thousands more units than their estimated capacity, as many teams are trying to do! One of the major problems with trying to produce above capacity is the cost- production is related to employee efficiency and the very expensive overtime costs.

In order to produce more units- firms must increase the firm’s capacity, through improved employee efficiency and long term investments!

**Think of what investment options you have, and which ones might affect a firm's physical ability to produce more units!!

Good luck!

Team SBC

Inputs Due on Good Friday Mar 19, 2008 @ 02:24 PM
SBC will continue through Easter Weekend!

There WILL be inputs due on Good Friday (March 21st) and the Tuesday following Easter Monday.

All firms should now be entering inputs for this Friday's submission, and we recommend that future inputs be used to submit for Tuesday's deadline, as most teams will not be in class on Easter Monday!

Good luck,

Team SBC
Rationale Reports- Use Responsibly! Mar 13, 2008 @ 10:53 AM
Many teams have opted to use the 'rationale report' function at this point.
This tool is intended for teams to communicate the reasoning behind their quarterly decisions to their teachers. Although most teams have used this tool responsibly, there are currently issues with inappropriate language and comments.

We would like to remind students that teachers can view these rationale reports.

Please use this tool responsibly and respectfully!

Team SBC monitors quarterly rationale reports. As of Quarter 5 (or inputs processed as of Friday March 14th), teachers will  be notified of any inappropriate language or comments submitted via rationale reports. SBC reserves the right to disqualify teams who abuse this tool. Please see Rules and Regulations for details.

Thank you for your co-operation,
Team SBC
Looking for a little extra help? Purchase market research! Mar 06, 2008 @ 03:19 PM
For a starting cost of $2,000, firms can buy information regarding the state of the market, such as industry averages.  An example is the average price within the market.  This information appears as tables on the Industry Analysis page if a firm chose to purchase a report for that quarter.
Can't make inputs? Feb 28, 2008 @ 10:54 AM
Are your student teams unable to make inputs?
This may be because passwords have not been changed from the defaults!

All team passwords must be changed before inputs can be submitted!
Managing passwords is the responsibility of the teacher- Tutorial #3 demonstrates this process!

Check out tutorial 3 here:
http://sprottbusinesscompetition.ca/SBC/information/general/tutorial.aspx

Cheers!

Teacher Practice Round Jan 28, 2008 @ 12:12 PM

Thank you to those of you who have already registered for

SBC Winter 2008!

We are gearing up for another exciting round of SBC. We would like to remind you that the registration deadline for the main competition is Saturday February 23rd at 9PM!

If you register yourself and your students by 9pm on February 2nd you can participate in the Teacher Practice Round beginning February 4th.

The teacher practice round will run from February 4th to February 8th and will operate the same way as the main competition. Teachers will enter two inputs, one Tuesday and one on Friday. This will allow teachers to see how inputs are entered, and to obtain the perspective and experience of participating students. This practice round will provide teachers with the opportunity to learn more about the game so as to become more comfortable in assisting their students throughout the competition.

Teachers can register for the practice round by logging into their SBC account and selecting "Teacher Practice" from the teacher menu. Teachers must  then check the YES box click update.

We strongly encourage teachers to participate in this valuable practice round so as to become familiar with SBC and the competition format.

We look forward to your participation!
